Why You’ll Love it:

I’m living for smoothie bowls lately! They’re so fun to eat AND I get to add my favorite thing – toppings.

This protein smoothie bowl has peanut butter jelly vibes! It’s a combination of mixed berries, peanut butter, banana, protein powder, and Greek yogurt.

It boasts 29 grams of protein. Protein is an essential part of our muscles, bones, cartilage, and skin. It helps our bodies get the nutrients they need to thrive!

I like to top it with sliced almonds, peanut butter drizzle, and more berries. Feel free to add whatever you like or eat it as-is.

Key Ingredients:

mixed berries, banana, vanilla protein powder, greek yogurt, almond milk, peanut butter.
  • Banana – I like to add half of a banana to my smoothie bowls. It creates a creamy consistency and adds natural sweetness. It doesn’t need to be frozen!
  • Greek yogurt – For extra protein and creaminess. I used plain nonfat Greek yogurt. If you prefer a sweeter smoothie, you can use flavored Greek yogurt.
  • Peanut butter – Adds plant-based protein and a subtle nutty flavor. Peanut butter is a versatile add-in to smoothies! It goes with nearly any fruit, including berries.
  • Vanilla protein powder – I used plant-based protein powder, but regular works great too. Just make sure you buy a brand you like. All brands taste different and some are not so great.
  • Almond milk – One of my favorite liquid bases! It’s low calorie with a creamy consistency.

How to Make a Protein Smoothie Bowl:

This smoothie bowl is simple! Here’s how to do it:

  • Combine: Add all the ingredients to a high-speed blender. Start with the soft ingredients – banana, yogurt, etc.
  • Blend: I always start the blender on low speed, then gradually increase the speed. It helps reduce stalling. If the mixture stops moving, stop the blender.
  • Scrape & blend: Stop the blender and carefully use a spatula to scrape the sides of the blender and push the mixture toward the blades. Blend again until smooth.
  • Serve: The smoothie should be nice and thick. Use a large spoon to scoop it into a bowl. Add your favorite toppings and enjoy!

Smoothie Bowl Tips:

  • I highly recommend a high-speed blender. The key to a thick smoothie bowl is minimal liquid. High-speed blenders are built to pulverize frozen ingredients and can handle the lack of liquid without destroying the motor.
  • Scrape as many times as needed. If the mixtures not moving, stop the blender and push the mixture toward the blades.
  • Add more liquid if needed. The more liquid you add, the looser your smoothie bowl will be. You can always add more, but you can’t take it out so add a little bit at a time.
  • Add the soft ingredients first. It gives the blades something to catch! The liquid sinks to the bottom no matter when you add it.

Ways to Incorporate Protein into Smoothies:

You don’t have to use protein powder! Here’s a few ways to add protein to all your smoothies and bowls:

  • Greek yogurt – Adds creaminess and protein!
  • Milk – 8 grams per cup
  • Soy milk – Soy milk has 8 grams per cup too, the same as dairy milk.
  • Cottage cheese
  • Hemp hearts – I buy a big bag at Costco! They’re barely noticeable in smoothies.
  • Nut butter – Almond, cashew, or peanut.
  • Oats
  • Chia seeds

Smoothie Bowl Toppings:

This protein smoothie bowl tastes delicious as-is, but even better with toppings! It’s a great way to add texture contrast.

  • Granola
  • Nuts – Sliced almonds are my fave!
  • Seeds – Hemp hearts or chia seeds
  • Coconut – Shredded coconut or chips
  • Fruit – Berries, kiwi, sliced bananas, or mango
  • Cacao nibs – Adds a bitter crunch!
  • Dried fruit – Cranberries or cherries
  • Nut butter – Melt it in the microwave and drizzle on top!

FAQs:

Is there protein in smoothie bowls?

It depends on what’s in it. Fruit provides a small amount of protein, but not much! A smoothie bowl contains protein if it includes high protein ingredients like Greek yogurt, peanut butter, protein powder, hemp hearts, milk, or chia seeds.

Can I make this protein smoothie bowl dairy-free and vegan?

Yes! You just need to swap the Greek yogurt for a vegan alternative and choose a plant-based protein powder. Check the label to make sure it’s dairy-free and vegan.
