Frozen Fruit Smoothie:

Whenever I’m lacking inspiration and just want simple and delicious, I reach for a bag of mixed fruit. You can’t go wrong!

Any variety of mixed fruit works great in this smoothie! I kept it simple with just four ingredients: banana, frozen fruit, juice, and plant-based milk. It’s naturally sweet with no added sugar and creamy from the banana!

This frozen fruit smoothie is easy to customize! Add yogurt, greens, protein powder, oats, you name it. I’ve included a list of variations and substitutions at the bottom of this post.

Key Ingredients:

  • Banana – For natural sweetness and creaminess! Be sure to use a yellow, ripe banana.
  • Frozen mixed fruit – If you check the frozen fruit section in your grocery store, you will notice they sell bags labeled mixed fruit. The fruits vary by brand. Mine had a mixture of peaches, strawberries, grapes, cherries, and pineapple. Any variety works great!
  • Orange juice – A splash of orange juice adds sweetness and citrusy tang! You can use any juice you like or have in your fridge. Juice adds a lot of sugar so I only used 1/4 cup.
  • Almond milk – My favorite plant-based milk for smoothies. You can use any kind. Soy milk adds the same amount of protein as dairy milk.

How to Make a Mixed Fruit Smoothie:

This smoothie is as simple as dump, blend, and pour. For those who like a bit more guidance:

  • Combine ingredients: In your blender, combine the banana, frozen fruit, and liquid – in that order. Make it a habit to add the soft ingredients first. It’s easier on the blades and the motor. The liquid can go in anytime. It sinks to the bottom even if added last.
  • Blend: Start the blender on low speed, then increase the speed to high. This step is important if you use a Vitamix. Starting the blender on high increases stalling.
  • Adjust: If the fruit smoothie’s too thick, add more liquid, a little bit at a time until it’s thick but pourable. Taste the smoothie for flavor and sweetness.
  • Serve: Pour into two small glasses or one regular sized one.

Expert Tips:

  • If needed, add more liquid. A thick smoothie is an easy fix! Just gradually add more liquid until you reach the desired consistency. You can always add more, but you can’t take it out!
  • Use frozen fruit. If you only use fresh fruit, your smoothie will taste like pulpy juice.
  • The more juice you add, the more sugar you add. I just add a splash (1/4 cup) for extra sweetness. You can add more if you prefer an extra sweet smoothie.
  • A banana creates a creamy texture. If you can’t have bananas, check out this list of banana substitutes. Yogurt is a good option!
  • To make this into a smoothie bowl, reduce the liquid to 1/2 cup total. A smoothie bowl is just an ultra-thick smoothie you can eat with a spoon.

Storage:

Smoothies are best enjoyed immediately! That being said, you can store them in the fridge for up to 24 hours. I don’t recommend any longer than that.

I prefer to store my smoothies in the form of popsicles. I pour it into popsicle molds, add popsicle sticks, and freeze overnight. Smoothie pops are especially refreshing in the summertime!

Variations:

This mix fruit smoothie is easy to customize. Here’s a few simple variations to get you started:

  • Protein powder – Add 3 tablespoons of protein powder for extra sweetness and a boost of protein.
  • Yogurt – Add 1/3 cup of Greek yogurt for protein and creaminess.
  • Seeds – Add one tablespoon of chia seeds or hemp hearts. Both add omega-3 fatty acids and plant-based protein. Chia seeds add more texture though.
  • Oats – Add 1/4 cup of rolled oats to make this an oatmeal smoothie.
  • Greens – Add a handful of baby spinach for a boost of iron, fiber, and vitamin A. Spinach has a mild flavor and blends easier than kale.
  • Fruit – Swap the mixed fruit with strawberries, pineapple, mango, or mixed berries.
  • Liquid – Swap the orange juice with apple, white grape, or passion fruit juice.
  • Sweetener – Add a teaspoon of honey or maple syrup for extra sweetness.
