What is smoothie bowl?

A smoothie bowl is an ultra-thick smoothie that’s meant to be enjoyed in a bowl with toppings and a spoon!

It’s a satisfying way to enjoy a smoothie because you get crunchy texture from the toppings with a smooth, cold base. I personally love it!

But the best part is it’s easy to incorporate healthy plant-based ingredients like:

a bowl of baby spinach.
  • Greens – Spinach, kale, etc.
  • Fruit – Berries, mango, pineapple, kiwi, pomegranate, etc.
  • Nut butter – Peanut, almond, cashew
  • Oats – Old fashioned, quick-cooking
  • Vegetables – Carrots, broccoli, cucumber, spinach, beets, sweet potato, etc.
  • Avocado – Technically a fruit, but it gets it’s own bullet!
  • Seeds – Hemp hearts, chia seeds, etc.

You can also add dairy products for a boost of protein like:

  • Greek yogurt – One cup has roughly 19 grams of protein!
  • Cottage cheese – Makes a creamy smoothie with a cheesecake-like flavor.
  • Protein powder – Look for a brand with high-quality ingredients.
  • Collagen peptides – Costco sells multiple brands for a good price.

If all these ingredients feel overwhelming, don’t worry! I’ve included 15 delicious smoothie bowl recipes to get you started.

Feel free to add a handful of spinach to any of them for a boost of nutrients!

Smoothie Bowl Toppings:

I highly recommend toppings for some texture contrast! It really ups the wow factor and overall taste of a smoothie bowl.

Here’s a few of my favorite toppings to get you going:

  • Granola – My favorite brand right now is one degree organics. Their sprouted oat cinnamon flax granola is SO tasty.
  • Nuts – I prefer sliced almonds. Chopped walnuts, pecans, cashews, and pistachios all taste great.
  • Nut butter – A drizzle of melted peanut butter is pure magic.
  • Fresh berries or sliced bananas
  • Cacao nibs – Such great crunch!
  • Rolled oats – Adds a slight chew and whole grains.
  • Pomegranate seeds
  • Seeds – Chia, pepita, etc.

The best way to find topping ideas is to go look in your pantry! Try to stick to whole foods for the best nutrition.
