Green Smoothie Bowl:

A smoothie bowl is just a smoothie that’s thick, scoopable, and served in a bowl with a spoon.

This green smoothie bowl is packed with sweet fruits, avocado, and baby spinach. It’s packed with beneficial plant compounds and antioxidants to leave you feeling energized!

I highly recommend a quality high-powered blender for this recipe. I use a Vitamix and the results are SO smooth without any texture or grit. It can pulverize nearly anything!

Key Ingredients:

banana, passion fruit juice. avocado, peaches, mango, spinach.
  • Banana – Bananas add natural sweetness and a creamy consistency! They’re also a good source of potassium and B vitamins.
  • Avocado – Avocadoes are a good source of fiber and healthy fats. Be sure to use a ripe avocado! Ripe avocadoes are very creamy!
  • Mango – Mango is rich in immune-boosting vitamin C. It’s smooth when blended and it has a bright orange hue that creates a bright green smoothie!
  • Peaches or pineapple – I had frozen peaches on hand, but pineapple tastes delicious too! Be sure to use frozen fruit for the right consistency.
  • Spinach – I always use baby greens! They have a mild flavor, tender leaves, and same nutritional profile as mature greens.
  • Passion fruit juice – My favorite brand is Cere’s 100% passion fruit juice blend. A little bit goes along way and it doesn’t contain added sugar! I avoid brands with a ton of added sugar like Welch’s.

How to Make a Green Smoothie Bowl:

This smoothie bowl is easy to make! You need 5 minutes and a high-speed blender.

  • Combine ingredients: Add the ingredients to your blender. I always start with the soft ingredients so the blades don’t stall.
  • Blend: Turn the blender on low and blend. Use your tamper to push the fruit toward the blades, if necessary. Gradually increase the speed.
  • Stop the blender, if necessary: If the mixture isn’t moving, stop the blender and scrape the mixture toward the blades with a spatula. Blend again until very smooth.
  • Serve: Scoop the mixture into one large bowl or two small ones. Add your favorite toppings. I added sliced almonds, sliced banana, and diced frozen mango.

Expert Tips:

  • Order matters – Especially in a smoothie bowl, since you add minimal liquid. Start with soft, non-frozen ingredients so the blades have something easy to catch.
  • You can always add more liquid, but you can’t take it out. If you’re patient and scrape the sides as needed, you shouldn’t need to add more.
  • If using a Vitamix, don’t blend too long. If you blend too long, the smoothie will start to melt and won’t be as thick! Just blend until it’s smooth.

Can I add protein to this smoothie bowl?

Yes! There are several ways to add more protein! My favorite way is with hemp hearts. You can buy a big bag at Costco and you can’t even taste them. You could also add a scoop of vanilla protein or a scoop of nut butter.

Variations:

Feel free to mix it up! Here’s a few simple swaps:

  • Juice – You can swap the passion fruit juice with apple juice.
  • Fruit – Swap the peaches with pineapple!
  • Greens – Swap the baby spinach with baby kale.
  • Nut butter – Add a tablespoon of peanut or almond butter for plant-based protein.

Smoothie Bowl Toppings:

Try any of these toppings for sweetness or crunch:

  • Fresh fruit – Sliced banana, chopped mango, sliced kiwi, berries, or sliced pear.
  • Nuts – Sliced almonds, macadamia nuts, pistachios, walnuts, pecans, peanuts, etc.
  • Granola – Adds crunch and sweetness!
  • Miscellaneous – Coconut chips, shredded coconut, chia seeds, cacao nibs, cereal, dried fruit, etc.
