Make your own takeout smoothies for a fraction of the price! This hulk smoothie tastes just like the one from Smoothie King, It’s rich, creamy, and packed full of protein.

Why you’ll love it:
Whenever I make copycat smoothie recipes, I go buy one first so I can taste test them side by side. This smoothie king copycat tastes just like the real thing!
The Hulk from Smoothie King is a rich high-calorie smoothie meant for weight gain. It’s like a cross between a protein shake and a chocolate milkshake. It’s rich, sweet, and creamy!
The hulk comes in three flavors – chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla. This is the chocolate version! Banana, protein powder, and butter pecan ice cream make the dreamiest dessert smoothie. And it’s super easy to make.

Key Ingredients:
Banana – For extra creaminess and thickens the smoothie a bit. Be sure to use a yellow, ripe banana. Bananas are a great source of vitamin C, potassium, fiber, and disease-fighting antioxidants!
Protein powder – The hulk from Smoothie King uses a protein powder referred to as the Hulk Blend. I used a chocolate whey protein powder, but you can use any type you prefer.
Cocoa powder – For an extra chocolatey flavor! Cocoa powder is rich in polyphenols, an antioxidant linked to reducing inflammation.
Milk – I used regular milk, but you can use any kind of milk – plant-based or dairy. For more calories, use whole or oat milk, for less calories, use unsweetened almond milk.
Butter pecan ice cream – This is a key ingredient in the hulk smoothie. It adds plenty of calories and it thickens the smoothie too!
How to Make the Hulk Smoothie:
Smoothies are super easy to make.
Combine ingredients: In the pitcher of your blender, combine the milk, banana, protein powder, cocoa powder, and butter pecan ice cream.
Blend: Blend until thick and creamy. If the smoothie’s too thick, add a splash more milk to thin it out. Don’t blend too long or you risk melting the ice cream.
Serve: Pour into a glass and enjoy! Smoothies are best enjoyed immediately, especially ones with ice cream. Otherwise it will melt!
Variations:
- Dairy-free – If you want to make this recipe dairy-free, use dairy-free protein powder and dairy-free ice cream. Swap the milk with unsweetened almond milk.
- Vegan – Not all dairy-free protein powder is vegan! Be sure to use a vegan protein powder and vegan ice cream. If you can’t find vegan butter pecan, you can use vegan vanilla ice cream and add two tablespoons of pecans. Use unsweetened almond milk instead of milk.
- Gluten-free – Not all protein powder brands are gluten-free. Use a gluten-free labeled protein powder to be sure.
- Less sugar – For less added sugar, you can use sugar-free ice cream or you can use a frozen banana and decrease the amount of ice cream. Increase the amount of milk as needed to achieve the right consistency.
- Sweetener – Smoothie king adds turbinado to the hulk, but I don’t think it needs any! You can add some if you like it extra sweet. Turbinado is just a less refined version of white sugar. It’s also called raw sugar.
Recipe Tips:
- Adjust the consistency as needed. My ice cream was on the softer side so I used a half cup of milk. If your smoothie is too thick, add a splash more milk. If it’s not thick enough, add ice cubes.
- The hulk was created to be a weight gain smoothie! That’s why it’s made with ice cream and protein powder. If you want a healthier version, swap the banana with a frozen one and decrease the amount of ice cream. Add more liquid as needed.
